The Internet of Things (IoT) is a buzz phrase that we are all going to hear a lot more about. This term has become the technological buzzword of our time and thanks to Samsung smart-home technology, we are going to hear a lot more about it in coming months. In the foreseeable future, the world’s largest electronics giant will be launching its Smart Things platform that they hope will allow householders to make their homes a mecca of technological advances.
Samsung Smart-home Technology – SleepSense
At a recent electronics show, Samsung showed what they hope will be standard fare in the homes of the future. Meet SleepSense, a frisbee style product that lies unobtrusively under your mattress. It is able to detect when you fall asleep and so turn off your TV program that was obviously so riveting that you couldn’t keep your eyes open. SleepSense adjusts the air-conditioner throughout the night so that you sleep at just the right temperature. As you wake, the window blinds are opened so that the warmth of the morning sun can wash over you. When you wander into the kitchen, the integrated coffee machine has already produced your cup of life, and the TV has been switched on to the morning news channel.
Here is what Samsung claims the Sleepsense monitor will be able to do:
Your sleep score is calculated based on seven elements; total sleep time, sleep efficiency, time it took to fall asleep, number of times you woke up, number of times you got out of bed, percentage of time in REM (rapid eye movement) and percentage of time in deep sleep.
Some of us cringe at the thought of such technological control. But think back 10 years. Did we imagine then what we do now with our smartphones? Emails, photography, movie watching, weather monitoring and so much more.
Samsung Smart-home Technology – Family Hub Refrigerator
You have had a crazy day at work and as you check the fridge for something to cook for dinner, you realise that you are looking at Old Mother Hubbard’s refrigerator. Worry no more! While you are slaving for the almighty dollar at work, your Family Hub refrigerator is keeping tabs on what you have in stock. It will even monitor the freshness of the food. So out comes the connected smartphone, and you check what is in stock in your Hub Fridge. Since you really want Mexican tonight, the refrigerator can order the missing ingredients from the local grocer. He will, of course, have the order ready for you to pick up as you drive home.
Samsung Smart-home Technology – Family Security
In these times where we get a little nervous about our family security, with a SmartThings camera connected to your IoT network, you will be able to know that your children have arrived home safely from school as well as provide a live feed of the front door to your television set. Now we may think that this is a little overkill. But in these uncertain times, many families are rightly concerned about home security and having a secure network gives them a measure of peace of mind, as well as having recorded evidence when things do go wrong.
Samsung Smart-home Technology – How Is It Possible?
Samsung smart-home technology is going to be big business. Samsung are developing their SmartThings technology as an open platform so that compatibility is possible with more brands than just Samsung. They anticipate that, once the system is flowing well, that over 50 brands with 200 products will be available to consumers. They anticipate this will give greater product choice to consumers than Apple’s HomeKit or Google’s Brillo platforms of connected products. The crucial role of the home television has been amplified by Samsung so that all new TVs released in 2016 will be IoT compliant.
This means that home owners can use their 55″ UHD LCD TV to control more than 200 SmartThings-compatible devices. You will even be able to active the garden’s watering system while you watch the NFL or MLB game of the week!
Samsung Smart-home Technology – Motor Vehicles
The Samsung IoT strategy is not confined to the family home. Recently, Samsung rolled out SmartThings support for Volkswagen and BMW. Regular up-dates regarding what is happening in your home will be put up on the screen of your new BMW 5-series. This will also allow you to automatically open your garage door as the vehicle approaches the home.
Samsung Smart-home Technology – Conclusion
There will be no end of products that will be part of the SmartThings IoT technology. The biggest challenge for all of us is adjusting to the rapidly changing technology landscape. Keeping up with what we have now is proving difficult for some, so having so much more in our home may be to much for some home owners. Does it take away the human element to life at home? Possibly, but humans will be operating it, cursing it (why are those blinds open at 7am on a Sunday?), thanking it, and gradually adjusting to the need for technology in our times.
It will be fascinating to watch what Samsung, Apple, Google and other technology behemoths do in the future will smart-home technology. Samsung smart-home technology looks like it is here to stay. How it benefits us remains to be seen.
