Samsung Galaxy A Smartphone – What You Need to Know!

Posted on Posted in My thoughts on Stuff

We all know about the embarrassment Samsung suffered over the Galaxy Note 7 meltdown. The worldwide recall and shutdown had a profound effect on consumer confidence in the technology giant. Consumers I talked to said that it was an amazing phone that had the potential to make a real impact on the smartphone market.  So it is with interest that I note that Samsung have announced the release of the updated Samsung Galaxy A smartphone series. While this post is not a comprehensive product review, it will give you some details that may make it an attractive alternative to the Galaxy S series.

Samsung Galaxy A Smartphone – Press ReleaseSamsung Galaxy A smartphone

Samsung Electronics today announced the latest Galaxy A series, including the 5.7-inch A7, 5.2-inch A5 and 4.7-inch A3 smartphones, with refinements that deliver a beautiful design, powerful performance and ultimate convenience.

“At Samsung, we are always trying to ensure our customers have the most advanced products on the market,” said DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “The latest Galaxy A series is a testament to this. We integrated our unique approach to design as well as the features Galaxy customers have come to love to provide added performance without compromising on style.” (source per Samsung Newsroom January 2, 2017)

Samsung Galaxy A Smartphone – Design Details

What are some key features of the Samsung Galaxy A smartphone that makes it an attractive alternative? The Galaxy A comes in three models, the A3, A5 and A7. What are the differences?  Let’s itemize some of the features:

  1. Screen Size: The A3 has a 4.7″ screen while the A5 and A7 are 5.2″ and 5.7″ respectively. This puts them securely in the phablet category. The A3 is HD Super AMOLED while the A5 and A7 are Full HD Super AMOLED screens. The viewing experience on these smartphones are going to be amazing.
  2. Camera: The A3 has a 13MP back camera along with an 8MP front camera. The A5 and A7 have 16MP cameras on both front and back. With these larger phones, that selfie is going to look amazing. What about if you love posting pics on social media about those great meals you enjoy at restaurants? The camera has a “Food Mode” that enhances image color and optimizes the photo. Your followers will love those posts even more!
  3. Storage: Expandable storage is back, baby! Samsung went through a phase where they cranked up the internal storage but no expandable MicroSD slot included. Now we have it back. The A5 and A7 start with 32GB of storage with an expandable slot up to 256GB. That will hold a few movies and music playlists. The A3 starts with 16GB built in and expandable to 256GB.
  4. Samsung Pay: All three models have the encrypted Samsung Knox storage software built in, so that Samsung Pay, the easy to use mobile payment system, can be seamlessly introduced as part of your digital solutions. To quote the news release, “With Samsung Pay, users can make safe and secure mobile payments almost anywhere through Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.” Read more about Samsung Pay here.
  5. Connectivity: The Samsung Galaxy A smartphone series has all the regular connectivity features such as Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi 802 and USB Type C which facilitates fast charging and data transfer.
  6. Colors: All three models are available in Black Sky, Gold Sand, Blue Mist and Peach Cloud. There is a metal frame and 3D glass to enhance viewer experience.

For those who are into the tech side of things, I have included the specifications breakdown below.

Samsung Galaxy A Smartphone – Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A smartphone series looks to be a great addition to the range of choices available for smartphone users. Prices haven’t been released yet but since there are some design features on the Galaxy S7 that are not on the Galaxy A, then it should be cheaper than the S series. The Galaxy A models have been designed to be practical and easy to use for everyday tasks. It is water and dust resistant and is a marked improvement on previous Galaxy A models. Apparently it will be released this month in Russia. I guess if it survives the extreme temperatures there, it will survive anything. Global markets will gradually see them on the shelf as 2017 unfolds. I am looking forward to getting my hands on one to examine it more closely. Watch out for my detailed review.
